[Heat-trace is used in many aspects of everyday modern life that mostly goes unnoticed. One main example of this is the ability to access hot water quickly from any faucet in a large building no matter how far from the water heater it is. This is a...

The lights flash, go out and then start all over again.

The lights flash when the heater tape is cold and the unit is turned on for the first time. The heat tape draws higher initial or inrush current when it is cold and this sags the internal processors power supply causing it to reset.

Where do I connect the sensor wires to?

The sensor wires are connected to the blue #18 awg wires in the low voltage section. The sensor is not polarized so it does not matter which sensor wire goes to which blue wire.

The #18 awg striped wires are to the SST-2 to an external alarm. The SST-2 uses a summary alarm, which will give an alarm for four different reasons: loss of power, failed temp sensor, ground fault test failure and a ground fault alarm.

Supply light flashing on SST-2

A flashing supply light means that the temperature sensor is either missing or bad. Ensure that the sensor is correctly wired to the two blue wires. The system will not function without a sensor. Click here to see more about the Temperature sensor.

Where should the temperature sensor be located?

Ideally, the temperature sensor should be located on the pipe on the opposite side from the heater. If this is not possible the sensor can be used as an ambient temperature sensor although it will be less efficient.

For the SST-2 the temperature set point is either 40 °F (4.44 °C) or 175 °F (79.44 °C) depending on the particular model being used. The set point is the temperature the unit uses for switching on and off with a 2 °F deadband. For the 40 °F (4.44...

When wiring the SST-2 the white and red wires of the controller must be wired together for the unit to have power. This is regardless of the voltage applied to the unit. The white wire powers the controller and the red wire goes to the contact of...
